Neck Rejuvenation – Improving Skin Quality, Firmness and Definition
The neck is an area that can show changes in skin quality as we get older. You may begin to notice fine horizontal lines, a crepey or thinner appearance, reduced firmness or more noticeable vertical bands running down the neck.
These changes are influenced by several factors, including the natural reduction in collagen and elastin, sun exposure, genetics, skin hydration and the movement of the underlying neck muscles. Because the skin here is relatively delicate, changes in texture and elasticity can become particularly noticeable.
At Renu, we take an individual approach to neck rejuvenation. Rather than focusing on one visible concern, we assess the skin, its underlying support and the movement of the neck muscles before discussing suitable treatment options.
A combined approach to neck rejuvenation
For suitable patients, a treatment plan may involve different injectable approaches, each intended to address a particular aspect of neck ageing.
These may include:
1. Calcium Hydroxyapatite (Radiesse®)
Radiesse contains calcium hydroxyapatite, a biocompatible material used in aesthetic medicine. It provides structural support and is also used for its biostimulatory properties, encouraging the skin’s own collagen production.
Over time, collagen stimulation may help improve the appearance of skin firmness, texture and support. The intention is to improve the quality and appearance of the treated area rather than create an obvious or exaggerated change in volume.
Potential benefits, depending on the individual and treatment technique, include:
- Improved skin support and firmness
- Improvement in the appearance of crepey skin
- Support for areas where skin quality and structure have reduced
- Gradual improvement as new collagen develops
2. Hyaluronic Acid (Belotero®)
Hyaluronic acid is a substance naturally found in the skin and has the ability to bind water. Certain hyaluronic acid injectable products are designed to improve hydration, soften the appearance of fine lines and provide subtle tissue support.
In the neck, where the skin can become dry and finely lined, an appropriate hyaluronic acid treatment may help improve the appearance of skin smoothness and hydration.
Potential benefits may include:
- Improved hydration and skin suppleness
- Softening of the appearance of fine lines
- A smoother-looking skin surface
- Subtle improvement in skin quality
3. Botulinum toxin treatment
Some visible neck lines and vertical bands are influenced by the activity of the platysma muscle, a broad superficial muscle that extends from the lower face into the neck.
In selected patients, botulinum toxin may be considered to reduce excessive muscle activity. This can help soften the appearance of certain muscle-related lines and bands.
It does not replace lost collagen or restore skin volume, so it is important to distinguish between lines caused by muscle movement and those caused by changes in the skin itself.
Potential benefits may include:
- Reduced prominence of selected vertical neck bands
- Softening of lines associated with muscle activity
- A smoother appearance in appropriately selected areas
Why does the neck change as we age?
The skin of the neck has different characteristics from many areas of the face. It is relatively thin and is exposed to sunlight, environmental factors and repeated movement throughout the day.
As collagen and elastin levels reduce, the skin may gradually lose some of its resilience. This can contribute to fine lines, reduced elasticity and a crepey appearance. The underlying muscles can also influence the way the skin folds and the visibility of vertical bands.
For this reason, successful treatment planning starts with identifying what is contributing to the changes rather than assuming that every neck needs the same treatment.
What results might I expect?
The outcome depends on your starting skin quality, the degree of laxity, muscle activity and the treatment selected.
Some injectable treatments may produce an earlier visible change, while treatments intended to stimulate collagen work more gradually. Improvements in skin texture and firmness may develop over several months.
The aim is a refreshed, natural-looking appearance, not to make the neck look artificially tight or overfilled.
Is this treatment suitable for everyone?
No. A detailed consultation is essential before considering injectable neck rejuvenation. Your medical history, medication, previous aesthetic treatments, skin condition and expectations all need to be reviewed.
All injectable procedures carry potential risks and side effects. These may include bruising, swelling, tenderness, redness, discomfort, infection, lumps or irregularities. Depending on the product and injection site, more serious complications can also occur.
We will explain the relevant risks, alternatives and aftercare before any treatment is undertaken.
Your consultation at Renu
At Renu, neck rejuvenation begins with an assessment of your skin and the underlying structures contributing to the changes you have noticed.
We will discuss your concerns, explain the options available and recommend an individual treatment plan where appropriate. Not everyone will require, or be suitable for, every treatment.
Our approach is to prioritise skin health, proportion and natural-looking results.
