Cyst Removal Dundee – What to Expect from Minor Surgery at Renu

Rated Excellent 5 out of 5 google

Found A Lump?

Finding a lump under your skin can be worrying, particularly if it has been present for many years or has started to grow, become uncomfortable, or catch on clothing. Fortunately, many skin cysts are benign (non-cancerous) and can be safely removed using a simple minor surgical procedure performed under local anaesthetic.

In this blog, we’ll explore what to expect from minor surgery at Renu how it improves comfort, can reduce the risk of infection, and why it may now be the right time to see Nurse Kristeen.

At Renu, I offer cyst removal in Dundee in a calm, clinical environment. The procedure is carried out under local anaesthetic, so the area is numbed before treatment begins. I am a Registered Nurse Independent Prescriber with extensive experience in dermatological conditions, minor surgery and dermoscopy screening , I have performed hundreds of minor surgical procedures since my  career in 2008.

I always take time to assess the cyst properly, explain what is involved, and make sure you feel comfortable before going ahead.https://renuskinclinic.co.uk/cyst-removal

What is a cyst?

A cyst is a small sac under the skin. It can contain keratin, fluid, or thicker material. The most common type we see is an epidermoid cyst.

Cysts can appear almost anywhere, but they are commonly found on the back, neck, scalp, face, chest, and shoulders.

Some stay small for years, while others slowly grow or become irritated.

When should you think about having a cyst removed?

You may want to consider cyst removal if:

  • It is getting bigger
  • It is becoming sore or irritated
  • It catches on clothing
  • It keeps becoming inflamed
  • It has started to discharge
  • It is in an awkward position
  • You are worried about it
  • You simply want it removed properly

Even when a cyst is benign, it can still affect your comfort and confidence.

What happens during cyst removal?

Cyst removal is a minor surgical procedure. You are awake throughout, but the area is numbed using local anaesthetic.

The skin is cleaned carefully using a sterile technique. A small incision is then made over the cyst, and the cyst is gently removed. The cyst wall is removed in full, as this helps reduce the risk of it coming back.

The wound is then  closed with stitches, Steri-Strips and a dressing.

Most appointments are straightforward and usually take around 45 minutes, depending on the size and position of the cyst.

Does cyst removal hurt?

Most people are surprised by how comfortable the treatment is.

You may feel a quick sting when the local anaesthetic is given, but once the area is numb, you should only feel pressure or movement rather than pain.

Afterwards, the area may feel tender, tight, or bruised for a few days. This is normal and usually settles with simple pain relief if needed. Heat increases blood flow to muscles and joints, accelerating recovery from exercise, injury, or general soreness. This also helps reduce swelling and inflammation over time.

Aftercare and healing

You will be given full aftercare advice before you leave the clinic.

This usually includes keeping the dressing clean and dry, avoiding heavy exercise or stretching over the area, and returning for stitch removal if needed. Healing time depends on the size and location of the cyst, but stitches are often removed around 7–14 days after treatment. A scar is expected after any skin incision, but this usually fades and softens over time.

Can a cyst come back?

A cyst can return if part of the cyst wall is left behind. This is why careful removal of the full cyst capsule is important. The aim is always to remove the cyst as completely as possible to reduce the chance of recurrence.

Why Do Cysts Develop?

One of the most common questions I get asked is, “Why have I developed a cyst?”

In most cases, cysts develop when skin cells become trapped beneath the surface of the skin instead of shedding naturally. These cells continue to produce keratin, a natural protein found in the skin, hair, and nails. Over time, this material builds up and forms a sac or lump beneath the skin.

Cysts are very common and can occur at any age. Some people are more prone to developing them than others, and they can occasionally run in families. Importantly, most cysts are benign, meaning they are non-cancerous. However, they can still become uncomfortable, inflamed, infected, or continue to grow over time.

Can a Cyst Burst or Become Infected?

Yes, cysts can occasionally rupture or become infected.

If this happens, you may notice:

  • Sudden pain or tenderness
  • Redness around the cyst
  • Swelling
  • Warmth
  • Discharge of thick white, yellow, or unpleasant-smelling material
  • Rapid increase in size

An infected cyst can be very uncomfortable and may require antibiotics or drainage before surgical removal is considered.

  • Best for localized pain relief, such as backaches or cramps.
  • Helps with muscle relaxation and improved mobility.
  • Can be used alongside stretching or mobility exercises.

My Approach to Cyst Removal

I know having any kind of minor surgery can feel daunting. I take the time to explain everything clearly and make sure you know exactly what to expect before, during, and after treatment. Most patients tell me afterwards that the procedure was much easier than they expected.

At Renu, my aim is not just to remove the cyst, but to make sure you feel listened to, comfortable, and confident throughout the process. If you have a cyst that is bothering you, or if you are simply unsure what a lump is, I would be happy to assess it and discuss your options with you.

Final Thoughts:

Cysts are incredibly common, and in many cases they are completely harmless. However, if a cyst is growing, becoming irritated, repeatedly inflamed, or simply bothering you because of its size or location, you do not have to just put up with it.

Having a lump removed can understandably feel a little daunting, but most patients are surprised by how straightforward the procedure is. My aim is always to make you feel comfortable, explain everything clearly, and provide safe, effective treatment with excellent aftercare.

At Renu , I believe in taking a personalised approach to care. Every patient is different, and I will always take the time to assess your cyst properly, discuss your concerns, and explain the treatment options available to you.

If you have a cyst that is causing discomfort, affecting your confidence, or you simply want reassurance about a lump under your skin, I would be happy to help.
