A-Z OF SKINCARE
E-EXFOLIATION
Today we discuss E for Exfoliation AND why its a must in everyones skincare regime. Read on………..
There are a lot of ways to stuff up exfoliating.
You can use exfoliating products too often, which compromises the skin and can leave it sensitised, shiny and thin. Or you can use them too infrequently, leaving the skin dull, congested and sad.
But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t do it. You should. You really REALLY should.
Exfoliation is an essential part of every skin care routine because it breaks down the ‘glue’ that holds dead skin cells together. Which forces old, dull, cloggy skin cells to bugger off, and allows fresh, new skin cells to come through all luscious and glowy.
So, let’s just it right and get on with life already.
What you need to know:
There are two kinds of exfoliation.
Physical exfoliation: which uses little particles to physically scrub your face and clear it of old, gross build up of dead skin.
Chemical exfoliation: which uses naturally occurring acids (usually AHAs or BHAs) to clear the skin of rank, old skin cells. Plus, chemical exfoliants typically give a far more even and thorough result, which is why we much prefer them. Think Enzymatic Peel at home product by ZO.
This at-home peel is formulated to create a softer, brighter skin appearance.

But whichever you choose, you should be using your exfoliating products 2-3 times a week minimum no more! Your skin doesn’t need it. And over-exfoliating is an altogether terrible idea. Your skin has only finite layers. And if you overdo it with exfoliation it’ll end up raw and sensitised and thin. Ick. Don’t.
They should be used straight after cleansing. And then followed by your chosen protocols of serums, growth factors and enhancers. AND if you’re using AHAs do this at night, and ALWAYS wear SPF in the daytime. (When using AHA products, wearing daily SPF becomes even more crucial.) (Ye, even in Winter and indoors.)
So let’s talk Blackheads….They are an accumulation of oil and oxidised dead skin cells, which is why they appear black in colour. They form in hair follicles where sebum and dead skin collect. Whiteheads are similar clogs, but the oil and dead skin cells do not touch the air, so they appear white. Along with pimples, blackheads and whiteheads are the typical symptoms of acne.
As Dr. Zein Obagi says, “The first line of defense against blackheads is to use a good exfoliating cleanser. This will loosen debris, bringing it to the surface where it can be washed away.” Exfoliating will also help to purge pores and keep them clean to prevent more blackheads from forming. Our ZO Exfoliating cleanser is formulated for daily use and in addition to removing impurities, sebum, and dead skin cells, it neutralises free radicals with encapsulated vitamin E.“Sebum control is also a necessary step in banishing blackheads.” Drenched with 2% salicylic acid, ZO Complexion pads or Oil Control pads reduces sebum production and soothes inflammation and irritation with botanical extracts. Perhaps even more important is the blackhead fighting properties of salicylic acid, which slows down the shedding process of cells inside the hair follicle to keep pores clear.
Finally, a light peel can help control blackheads by removing debris and dead skin before it has a chance to clog the follicle. Invest in an at-home chemical peel such as ZO® Enzymatic Peel™, which uses an enzymatic process to exfoliate the outer layer of the skin without flaking or peeling. It also makes the skin more receptive to other acne fighting ingredients.
Do that, and you’ll be rewarded with:
