Atrophic vaginitis (now more commonly called genitourinary syndrome of menopause – GSM) is a condition caused by reduced oestrogen levels, most often during perimenopause and menopause.

Lower oestrogen leads to thinning, dryness, and increased fragility of the vaginal tissues. This can result in symptoms such as vaginal dryness, soreness, burning, itching, pain during intimacy, recurrent urinary infections, or urinary discomfort.
