Eyelid Surgery

Eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) is cosmetic surgery to remove excess skin or fat from the eyelids. The aim is to improve hooded or drooping eyelids or eye bags.

Blepharoplasty (BLEF-uh-roe-plas-tee) is a type of surgery that removes excess skin from the eyelids. With age, eyelids start to sag and the muscles supporting them weakens. As a result, we see excess skin and fat that gathers above and below your eyelids. This can cause sagging eyebrows, droopy upper lids and bags under the eyes.

The first thing you should ask is ‘Who will cary out my procedure’ and this is important. You want to find a suitable specialist surgeon where blepharoplasty is performed. At your first consultation, you should ask the surgeon about their training and experience. It is preferable to have this procedure done by a surgeon who is specially trained to perform blepharoplasty and who has a lot of experience in carrying out this type of surgery. At RENU our expert plastic surgeon is an ophthalmic surgeon. Dr. Ann-Marie Firan is Clinical Lead and Consultant Ophthalmologist for the NHS and is a highly trained surgeon that has received additional training in reconstructive eye surgery. She carries out those procedures every day and this is her speciality. To date she has carried out over 1300 eyelid procedures.

Before considering blepharoplasty it is important to ask your surgeon if you are an ideal candidate. This will help ensure that the procedure is as successful as possible. An ideal candidate is someone in overall good health. It is also important for potential candidates to have realistic expectations about the results that can be obtained with this procedure. Typically people contemplating this surgery are looking to improve excess skin on the upper and/or lower eyelid, droopy or sagging eyelids, pronounced bags under the eyes, or droopy lower eyelids.

The results of eyelid surgery will typically last from anywhere between 5-10 years but this does all depend on how you naturally age and your genetics.
Eyelid surgery procedure aims to correct hooded or drooping eyelids by removing excess fat and skin from around the eyes. Depending on what is bothering you, you will have either an upper or lower blepharoplasty (eye bag removal) but some patients who have more severe eye problems may feel they need the combined procedure to restore a youthful and refreshed appearance.

Although you’ll notice changes in your eyelids as soon as your treatment is over, it may take as long as six weeks for your final results to develop. This is because the skin and tissue in the eye area will need time to settle and heal after surgery.

Your elelid surgery is performed on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia. Depending on whether you’re having your upper or lower eyelids treated, we’ll make small incisions in either the crease above the eye or just below the lower lashline. Any extra fat or tissue that is contributing to puffiness is then removed, and the skin on the lid is tightened. The area is completely numb throughout the procedure. You may expletive the surgeon pulling on the skin. Your treatment is carried out in a sterile environment in our minor surgical day case theatre.

Given the tight contours and delicate skin in the eye area, many patients ask about how uncomfortable this surgery will be. The good news is that this treatment is very tolerable. You’ll be given local anaesthetic with adrenaline  during the surgery, so you’ll feel nothing as the surgeons works on your eyes. . Patients only experience minimal discomfort while recovering. Your eyelids may feel tight and itchy, but compared to some other cosmetic treatments, eyelid surgery is surprising easily.

Recovery can be broken down into 3 parts: bruising, swelling, and the maturation of the incision/scar. Bruising goes away first, taking about 2  weeks. Next is swelling that is much more variable, lasting upwards of 8 weeks or more. It is a slow gradual diminution. Going back to work or out in public will begin in 5 to 10 days after your surgery and will be determined by your comfort level rather than a medical reason.

It is important to note that you will have scars from surgical incisions after your eyelid surgery. It can take a up to a year or more for those scars to reach their maximum improvement. Using proper eyelid surgery recovery methods can ensure your skin heals properly during this time.

Tips for Recovery

Now that you know what to expect from your blepharoplasty, here are a few eyelid surgery recovery tips. With these tips, you can improve your recovery time and make sure you heal properly.

Take Time Off

It is important to take time off from your work, school, or daily activities. You will need this time to heal properly.

If you need to, ask someone to cover your primary responsibilities for you. For example, you might need someone to take your kids to school and pick them up. You might need someone at work to handle your responsibilities as well.

Make sure to stock up with foods that are easy to prepare before the day of your surgery.

Otherwise, keep your schedule clear and give yourself time to heal.
