My ZO Controlled Depth Peel
Just imagine what new bark looks like on a tree after it’s shed the old crusty bits………..Well thats what your skin will look like with this peel…..Read On!!!
Day Of The Procedure
Before embarking on this peel, I strictly adhered to the skin prep protocol for 12 weeks prior to the peel. As a medical procedure performed by a qualified and experienced practitioner, it is vital for patients to stick to all instructions in prepping the skin prior to having this peel done. I was having this peel carried out for several reasons. One I had years of acne scarring and also pigmentation problems but as a skin practitioner using ZO I also wanted to let people experience the downtime and results. Follow my photographical journey of the peel below…
So today I travelled to The Surface Clinic in Bradford to have my CDP(Dr Obagi). I was nervous but also very excited. I had been prepping my skin for around 12 weeks with Dr Obagi Zo Skin Health and ZO Medical products so my skin was well prepared to take the peel. Dr Rita Podder from the Peppermint Group in Glasgow was my treating practitioner under the guidance and mentorship of the wonderful Dr Sam Van Easson who also trained me in my ZO training.
I boarded the train from Dundee to Bradford on Monday morning and my peel was scheduled for 1pm. There were lots of other patients having the peel done prior to me so it was good to get their views on the procedure. I must admit by this time my stomach was churning with the blue face knowing I had a 5 hour journey home like this.
The time of the peel arrived and I was giving a few little tablets to relax me first then I was degreased by the lovely Sara Smith from Wigmore Medical. We had a little lunch whilst the relaxation medication took effect. Next up was the facial blocking in order that I do not feel the peel. This was very comfortable and not as I expected. Once I was completely numb with anaesthetic the peel was mixed and applied to the skin.
The first few minutes are okay and I was able to go without the cooling fan however as the peel was applied more the heat began to come to the surface. Although there is absolutely no pain you do feel the heat at times intense. This is when I used the cryo 6 which is a cooling fan you hold and can place wherever you feel the heat. Once the depth has been met the peel is complete. I would say the whole heat time was approx 5 min and had completely gone by the time I sat up. My skin felt tight and I wasn’t able to eat anything solid and to stick to liquid products for today. I was even on strict instructions to adhere to after the peel which would continue for the next 10 days.
So here I was all peeled by the world famous Dr Obagi and ready to board my train home looking like a smurf. I was not concerned and I did get a few odd looks on the train.

Day 1 after the peel
So today is the first day after the peel and I am feeling fine, I have minimal swelling of the face and eyes. The blue tinge come off a little when I washed with ZO foamacleanse and then I applied my surfatrol which is an astringent compress to keep crusting and weeping at bay. This is applied as a compress every 2/3 hours. I then apply my post procedure calming cream which definitely helps with the tightness. I was at work today and I chose to stay at work as I wanted clients to see the downtime associated with this sort of peel. If I was not a practice clinician I would most definitely recommend at least 7 -10 days off work. Throughout the day all I can feel is tight skin. I am unable to open my mouth wide so eating solid foods is really the only issue so sticking to liquids like soups is advised. Day 1 has been a good day

Day 2 after the peel
So I woke up today and noticed a huge difference in swelling especially around the eye area but this was to be expected and I was aware this can happen. The tightness has increased today but the blue tinge is fading more after the compresses. I went to work today to treat clients as I feel so well and other than the tightness and swelling nothing that would stop me from performing my day to day duties. I look like I’ve had a few rounds with a boxer but I explained to my clients what is happening and that not to be alarmed by the swelling. Most of my clients were intrigued and new clients I saw that day were advised what I was going through. Most people may not like to show people the results but this is my job and felt it was appropriate. I wasn’t worried and I hope they weren’t either!!
I managed to stick to the compresses every 3 hours and apply my creams. I also started on some medication to reduce the swelling and will continue this for the next week. Throughout the day the swelling reduced more and more and by evening time there was a marked difference. There is no peeling at this stage yet and I expect this maybe around day 4. I went to bed early and slept upright to try to help with the swelling for the next day.

Day 3 after the peel
Its 4 am and I am awake as I didnt sleep very well. When I looked in the mirror I most definitely have more swelling today and I look like an elephants bottom maybe was a little to quick in thinking the swelling would be better today but I have taken my medication and applied my compress and creams. I have a full clinic today which I am not worried about but I am hoping my clients are not too concerned with todays look. My lips have started to peel so thank god for the pomatrol cream.I have a little oozing on my cheek but I know that Rita went a little deeper in this area where I had my acne scarring. I am not worried in the slightest and the surfatrol will keep that at bay. Skin is cracked at the mouth area and I am so tempted to start picking it off but I won’t of course because it will not heal and possibly scar unevenly. You must not peel, rub or encourage the skin to drop off in any way. When the sun starts to come off you cut loose the skin.
I have pre warned some of my clients who are arriving however I have 4 new clients who I am hoping won’t be put off with the look. If it was Halloween I would have no problem !!!!. I may not be able to smile but I am smiling inside and still have my humour. Definitely an easy treatment to manage though. #excited #resultswillbeamazing
12pm and I resemble Verger from Hannibal, my skin is so tight around the eyes and flaking by the hour. I cut the areas of skin that is literally hanging off. The skin is like leather and crispy but skin feels amazing underneath. Don’t think I have felt skin like this in years.
3pm- My skin has literally come off the whole chin are now and I can finally open my mouth and have a normal conversation without having people lip read me and it feels fab. I am also able to eat normal now. It is very tempting not to pick the area and keep having to remind my wandering hands to stay clear. I am also washing the skin with the surfatrol every 2 hours now with the pomarol cream to keep moist.
8pm- Home from a very busy clinic and it went well considering I looked like Verger all day..My clients old and new were great and by the end of the day I felt like I had a great following of clients who were interested in the results. Some even going to consider the peel. Others not to keen after seeing the downtime but that is to be expected as not everyone will want this sort of downtime. Maybe they will change their mind when they see my amazing results.
10pm- Did my usual routine and off to bed. My eyes are less swollen now
For everyone else other than me – Sociability rating still 0. Immediate family members only but even they may be scared still. Children are past the look now pets will allow you to walk them to the park(with your hood up). Postman will be used to you now and won’t give you a second look.
Day 4 after the peel
5am- I woke to do my routine as my skin was resembling a prune and was drying out. So same old routine and all soft again. So this morning the skin around the mouth is completely off and pink/red. My eyes are less puffy and I have reduced my medication today. My eyes are the most areas of puffiness now and the cheeks seem to have settled more. The skin around the upper 1/3 face is still intact with old skin but gradually softening. The forehead is still intact and hard. The skin around my eyes are tender but it does not limit anything that I do. I think patients will be less scared of me today .I seem to have to explain to everyone I see what is happening to me. I have a full clinic today but will still have explaining to do to my old and new clients.Today is the last day I use pometrol and I switch to the other oatmeal cream to repair the skin and until fully healed. I will satay on my surfatrol for 10 days.
I feel so much better today and the skin is most definitely healing now. Today I stopped my 3 hour washes and begun my next routine. For the next 5 days I will do this. Swelling has all but gone and I am beginning to look normal. My kids are used to the look now and don’t bat an eyelid. They are used to seeing mummy with skin hanging off and they are very knowledgeable on what Mummy’s work entails. They also use the term ZO Blue now. Everything is ZO Blue, the kids know Dr Obagi so well now and his amazing protocols!!!
Day 10- I have now healed and all new skin has appeared. For the next 12 weeks I will follow the post procedure HQ protocol.
Day 24- I have broken out is acne which is normal and am very dry and scaly again due to the HQ and tretinoin but this will ease as the weeks go on.
Day 45- Skin has all but healed and pigmentation completely gone. My acne scarring which had a mixture or rolling and boxcar scarring has faded so much. The results so far are phenomenal.
12 weeks post CDP- Well I am not complete and on maintenance and WOW just WOW the results speak for themselves. My skin will only improve over the following months. I am preparing for CDP number 2 in 2018 to reduce the scarring some more.
