Lips have always long attracted the attention of others. As the most prominent and sensuous feature of the face, they most certainly create impact at first glance.
Times have changed dramatically since my humble beginnings in 2008 when I commenced my aesthetic career. New products, new techniques has driven my business immensely over the years. With intense training and working with some of the best in the industry this has allowed me to use those techniques to create better shape, volume and natural enhancement. Using the MD codes in most of my lip treatments this gives my clients the best possible outcomes.
People often ask me how to achieve large volume in the lips. This is achieved over a period of time and using not only 1 ml of lip product but several mls. I like to tell my patients that it is a journey that we will embark on for several months until we achieve the perfect lip creation.
Most of my patients ask for natural subtle lip enhancement however I also have patients who wish to have the most volumetric product used. When I conduct your consultation there are several issues I take into consideration.
- Shape of the lips at rest/Shape at maximum contraction
- Philtrim and Cupids Bow
- Corners of the mouth
- Perioral lines
- Vermillion border or the white roll
- Dental arcade that provides volume throughout the mucosa of the upper lip
As a rule of thumb the upper lip should be approx 75-80% of the volume of the lower lip and the central lip should protrude slightly beyond the upper lip. A ration of 1 1:6
I will then determine what best product to use for that indication and amount.
Anatomical Challenges
Lip tissue is different from the skin on the rest of the face. With lips constantly being subjected to the mechanical stress due to muscle activity such as speaking, eating etc. In addition the lips do not retain water as well as other skin tissue and it does not contain the same amount of glands or pigmentation on the rest of the face. The lips then are more susceptible to dehydration.Lips will generally last around 6 months but can be slightly less or more depending on the individual.
Regardless of whether we are born with well defined lips or not we must remember that the quality of the lips will change with age and time. As we start to age the skin thins more and we lose muscle support, changes in bone structure and bone resorption. This will lead to flattening of the lips, changes in peri oral lines and will make the lip less shapely.
Our ageing lips is characterised by the decrease in the vermillion border, cupids bow and philtrim. You may also find the oral commissures become more prominent along with smokers lines.
